Tips for Summer Driving
Preparation for the season is always a smart plan for you and your vehicle. Summer is one of the most popular times for road trips, and July, August, and September are the most common months for automobile accidents to occur.
Keep in mind that summer weather conditions can be the same rigors for your car as in winter, especially if your vehicle is not prepared properly.
Passengers and drivers are no happier being stranded on the road in a summer heat wave than they are in a winter storm. Make sure your trip route is planned well in advance so that you would know what to expect and where to go. That type of planning will also help you to save money on gas.
WHAT EVERY DRIVER SHOULD KNOW:
- Choose the correct size child seat.
- Check the condition of all tires (including the spare).
- Check the oil (it should be changed every 5,000 kilometers).
- Check the engine cooling system (including the air conditioning).
- Make sure wiper blades are still in good condition.
- Check the transmission fluid (it should be serviced every 50,000 km).
- Make sure the power steering fluid is at the proper level.
- Make sure that all the lights on the vehicle work.
- If engine is running poorly it likely need tune-up.
- Have the breaking system inspected and adjusted.
- If you are going on a longer trip it is always good idea to have road side kit, some common hand tools, first aid kit, emergency phone numbers, and emergency light with spare batteries. Also make sure you have road maps, anti-freeze, washer fluid and extra supply of oil with you.
- If you are pulling a trailer, make sure everything is in good condition. Don't forget to check the wheel bearings.
