Alcohol in Low Fat Diet
Alcohol is high in calories. Decreasing your alcohol intake can promote weigh loss. Alcohol increases triglycerides; therefore, you should reduce or eliminate it from your diet.
Although moderate drinking of alcohol may have some health benefits for some people, most health practitioners in North America will not promote alcohol consumption as a way for people to improve their health.
A drink is:
- a 12-ounce bottle of beer;
- a 5-ounce glass of wine; or
- a 1½-ounce shot of liquor.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans defines "moderate use" of alcohol as no more than two alcoholic beverages a day for men and no more than one alcoholic beverage a day for women. Women are generally more sensitive than men to the harmful physical and mental effects of alcohol.
According to the NIAAA (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism), men may be at risk for alcohol-related problems if their alcohol consumption exceeds 14 standard drinks per week or 4 drinks per day, and women may be at risk if they have more than 7 standard drinks per week or 3 drinks per day.
