Government Regulations

There are a number of legal and regulatory requirements large and small businesses may be obliged to follow. Some are laid by federal or provincial government, some by the municipality and others by regulatory bodies and it is very important to find all the rules and regulations that apply to your type of business. LICENCES & PERMITS

REGISTRATION OF A NAME - You may have to register your company name before you start using it. You are responsible for ensuring that the your business name is not already in use.

ZONING AND BYLAW APPROVAL - It is very important for your business to check zoning and bylaw regulations before signing a lease or new construction take place.

LICENCES AND PERMITS - Many businesses, but not all, require a municipal licence, to find out more about that check with your municipal licensing board or commission.

SPECIAL REGULATORY LICENCES - Many businesses may be subject to special regulatory licences. They are designed to protect the interest and safety of the public regarding the use, application or sale or sale of certain items or services (food, alcoholic beverages, drugs, transportation, motor vehicle operations and so on).


TAXES AND DEDUCTIONS

GOODS AND SERVICE TAX - Most goods and services are taxable and some products are exempt from tax. More information about taxation may be obtained from tax offices.

MUNICIPAL BUSINESS TAX - Most municipalities levy a business tax, usually assessed as a percentage of the rental value of your business facilities.

MANDATORY EMPLOYEE DEDUCTIONS AND TAXES -If you hire employees, you'll have to make regular deductions from their paychecks.


LEGISLATION AND CONTROL

CONSUMER PROTECTION LEGISLATION - Determine what regulations apply to your business, because that may affect the way you manufacture your product or sell your good or service.

QUALITY CONTROL - Your business may be subject to periodic government inspection to ensure you are meeting accepted standards or practices regarding health and safety, depending on type of your business.
