No
matter where
you like to vacation or what activities you enjoy, the fact remains you
have to get there and back. For many, this could mean long hours in a
cramped plane, car or train. With this comes the risk of blood clots.
DVT,
or deep vein thrombosis, is a blood clot that can develop when sitting
for an extended period of time. The condition is serious, potentially
fatal and very difficult to diagnose by external examination. more>
For many
people, going outdoors is a new experience. They have no
agenda, no plans for what to do, and no knowledge of the outdoors. When
it comes to the children, they are just as lost as the adults, having
never been taught how to survive in the great outdoors. Browse our
guide to the most useful emergency information. more>

Risks
From Food & Water
- Contaminated food and water (drinking and
recreational) are common sources for the introduction of pathogens into
the
body. Among the more common infections that travelers can acquire from
contaminated food and drink are Escherichia coli infections,
shigellosis or bacillary dysentery, giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis,
noroviruses, and hepatitis A. Other less common infectious disease
risks for travelers include typhoid fever and other salmonelloses,
cholera, rotavirus infections, and a variety of protozoan and
helminthic parasites (other than those that cause giardiasis and
cryptosporidiosis). Many infectious diseases transmitted through food
consumption and drinking water can also be acquired directly through
the fecal-oral route. Accidental consumption of recreational water from
lakes, rivers, oceans, and inadequately treated swimming pools can
spread these same diarrheal diseases as well as ear, eye, skin,
respiratory, and neurologic infections.
Summer
Driving Tips - Summer weather conditions can be the same
rigors for your car as in winter,
especially
if your vehicle is not prepared properly. Passengers and drivers are no
happier
being stranded on the road in a summer heat wave than they are in a
winter storm.

Africa Safety Tips -
Your holiday or business trip can be spoiled by unfortunate incidents.
This happens every day all over the world. If you follow the following
hints, the risk should be minimized.

anecdotes, observations, tirades, and stories, mostly gleaned from...
Drugs
and Travel - Don't be tempted to smuggle drugs
to earn
fast, easy cash. Any deal that sounds too good to be true is too good
to be true. Chances are it won't work. If you're caught with drugs in a
foreign country, you'll end up paying a stiff fine, spending time in
jail or possibly even facing the death penalty. It's not worth it!
TRAVEL
GUIDES
- Travel guides date quickly: hotel prices rise, visa rules are
revised,
new attractions open, restaurants close. To help cost-conscious
travelers
stay abreast of such changes, Lonely Planet, publisher of a well-known
series of backpacker travel guides, is issuing updates to some of its
most
popular titles on the Web. The addendums summarize important changes
that
have taken place since the most recent guide to a given country
appeared.
Would-be adventurers to check that on their web site: www.lonelyplanet.com, and
print out the update you need and stick it in the back of your personal
guidebook.
