Croatian Culture & History
|
|
The
beauty of Croatia has been captured in countless books, paintings and
photographs. "The gods wanted to crown their creation and the last day
they turned tears, stars and the sea breeze into the isles of Kornati".
Thus spoke George Bernard Shaw, referring to the largest archipelago in
the Mediterranean. Few people realise that Shakespeare's "Twelfth
Night" takes place here, or that Carlo Goldoni, Jack London, Eugene
Ionesco, to name but a few, were enchanted by the beauty of the
Croatian landscape.
The famous master of plots and intrigues Agatha Christie also had a
good reason to find a special place in her heart for Dubrovnik and
Split: she spent her second honeymoon there.

CROATIAN CULTURE |
Croatian
Museums & Galleries -
The culture of Croatia has roots in a long history: the Croats have been
inhabiting the area for thirteen centuries, but there are important remnants
of the earlier periods still preserved in the country.
Croatian
Churches, Shrines, Monasteries - Some Croatian cities are so distinctively
marked by their churches that it is by the churches that they are recognized.
Scatered all over Croatia are also numerous little churches which house
remarkable treasures.
Preromanesque
in Croatia - Across the coastal regions of
Croatia, there are many monuments from early medieval times, dating from
the periods of Late Antiquity to Romanesque.
Croatian
Language - In the 14th century Croatia had schools and pharmacies.
Croatians wrote some of the most splendid pages in the history of science,
engineering, literature and music.
Croatia,
an Overview of History, Culture & Science -
When you meet a new friend or colleague, you are
necessarily confronted with his cultural and historical background,
peculiarities of his own, that are sometimes difficult to conceive.
Having
this in mind, we believe you will understand...
The
Fantastical World of Croatian Naive Art - Scholars have referred to "the miracle of Croatian naïve
art," and there is certainly an almost miraculous story behind its development.
The "movement" began in the northern isolated Croatian village of Hlebine.
These humble, minimally educated artists began to paint for their own enjoyment
during the long, oppressive winters when they could not farm and were forced
to spend most of their time indoors. Many of the paintings, then, reflect
in part what they saw from their windows, but they frequently transformed
these rural scenes into dreamscapes. They escaped their loneliness and
isolation through wonderful flights of imagination.
The
Neck Tie-Cravat - As millions
around the world
dress to go to work each day or to go out for the evening, most
probably
do not realize that a major accessory of their wardrobe, the necktie,
or
kravata, is Croatia's contribution to the world of fashion.
