St. Kitts
offers a diverse tourism product developed from the destination’s
natural beauty, cultural heritage and rich history with a wide range of
interesting sites. The impressive fortress at Brimstone Hill is really
a must-see, and the
faded gingerbread charm of the capital Basseterre is unique in the
Caribbean.
The island’s
stunning variety of tourism attractions include hiking through the
tropical rainforest, riding the scenic railway that connects the
island’s sugar plantations, touring Brimstone Hill Fortress National
Park, the only man-made UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Eastern
Caribbean, and the more traditional vacation pastimes such as
water sports, golf, shopping, tennis, gourmet dining, gaming at one of
St. Kitts’ two casinos or simply relaxing on one of the island’s sandy
beaches.
The islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis are two
of the Caribbean's oldest
colonized territories. Saint Kitts became the first British colony in
the West Indies in 1624 and then became the first French colony in the
Caribbean in 1625, when both nations decided to partition the island.
The island of Nevis was colonized in 1628 by British settlers from
Saint Kitts. Although small in size, and separated by only 2 miles
(3 km) of water,
the two islands were viewed and governed as different states until the
late 19th century, when they were forcefully unified by the British.
Today, this beautiful country is an independent Commonwealth realm with
Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state, represented in St. Kitts and
Nevis by a Governor-General, who acts on the advice of the Prime
Minister
and the Cabinet. The prime minister is the leader of the majority party
of the House, and the cabinet conducts affairs of state.
Guests can select from accommodations
ranging from intimate
plantation inns to larger hotels or resorts.
