Audio CD (June 22, 1993); Number of Discs: 2
For those of us who grew up in the '70s, this drive-in compilation
of '50s and '60s rock and doo-wop, complete with Wolfman Jack introductions,
was our introduction to this music. There are 41 jukebox hits here, and
every one of them is a classic of its time (although two tracks--"At the
Hop" and "She's so Fine" are covers by the revival band Flash Cadillac
& the Continental Kids). In his 1973 movie, director George Lucas used
the music (and the presence of mysterious deejay Wolfman) as the AM-radio
soundtrack to one night in suburban California, 1962. The idea was to capture
and sustain an end-of-summer, end-of-innocence mood that's in the air throughout
the picture-- not as a shortcut to establishing a period (as in Robert
Zemeckis'Forrest Gump). There's an awful lot of spontaneous energy in these
tunes--from Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, to the Platters and the Clovers
and the Del-Vikings, to the Crests and the Beach Boys--and also just a
hint of melancholy that goes down very nicely with a burger, shake, and
fries.

Trainspotting:
Music From The Motion Picture [SOUNDTRACK]
Trainspotting
(Related Recordings), Various Artists - Soundtracks - 1996
Audio CD (July 9, 1996); Number of Discs: 1
The first of two Trainspotting discs is a prime example of the contemporary
rock soundtrack, functioning as a useful keepsake of the 1996 British film
smash and as a cohesive, eclectic listen in its own right. Iggy Pop's booming,
Bowie-produced 1977 anthem "Lust for Life" sets the boisterously ambivalent
mood for a transatlantic, trans-generational cross-section of alt-rock.
New Order's seminal 1982 dance hit "Temptation" and Lou Reed's hauntingly
bittersweet 1972 tune "Perfect Day" shares space with tracks by such esteemed
mid-1990s Brit-popsters as Blur (whose frontman Damon Albarn also contributes
a solo number), Pulp, Elastica, and Sleeper. Elsewhere, the album dips
into dance rhythms (Underworld, Bedrock featuring KYO) and ambient grooves
(Brian Eno Leftfield, and Primal Scream's ten-and-a-half-minute title song)
without breaking the spell. --Scott Schinder |

Boys
On The Side: Original Soundtrack Album [SOUNDTRACK]
Various
Artists - Soundtracks - Song Collections
Audio CD (January 31, 1995); Number of Discs: 1
Boys may be on the side - but women rockers take front and centre stage
on this 13-track delight! Whoopi Goldberg, Mary-Louise Parker and Drew
Barrymore star in this comedy romp as a trio of cross country travelers
heading for San Diego and much more than they had bargained for when they
started off. Making the trip a great deal more enjoyable are the songs
heard on the soundtrack, performed by some of the top female singers today,
including Bonnie Raitt, Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks, Annie
Lennox, and Whoopi herself. |

Reservoir
Dogs: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
[SOUNDTRACK]
Various Artists - Soundtracks - 1992
Audio CD (October 13, 1992); Number of Discs: 1
While not as much of a commercial success as Quentin Tarantino's later
film Pulp Fiction,
Reservoir Dogs is today regarded as a classic, although happily one
that doesn't take itself too seriously. With its out-of-sequence narrative
involving a diamond heist, its desperate characters expressing opinions
on music and cinema, and the constant radio play (all the film's music
is from source cues), Dogs remains shocking and exhilarating. Even stronger
on the CD is the implication that the story is somehow being told by Steven
Wright's deadpan '70s disc jockey. Tracks include "Little Green Bag" by
the George Baker Selection, "Hooked on a Feeling" by Blue Swede, "I Gotcha"
by Joe Tex, "Coconut" by Harry Nilsson, and the one that will always remind
viewers of the movie's grisliest scene, "Stuck in the Middle with You"
by Stealers Wheel. --Stanley Booth |
