Dick Dale's surf-guitar provided the memorable title theme ("Misirlou"),
for Quentin Tarantino's 1994 smash, and although that sound runs throughout
the soundtrack (along with bits and pieces of dialog from the movie), this
is a pretty eclectic bunch of really terrific songs. I don't know how it
all manages to hang together, but it does (you might say the same for the
interwoven stories in the movie). Where else are you going to find Chuck
Berry, Maria McKee, Al Green, The Statler Brothers, Kool & the Gang,
Urge Overkill (singing a Neil Diamond ballad!), Ricky Nelson, Dusty Springfield,
and the Tornadoes (among others) one album? McKee's beautiful "If Love
is a Red Dress (Hang Me in Rags)" is a standout, partly because it's less
familiar. One of the few soundtracks of the '90s that went into the CD
player and stayed there for weeks and months thereafter. --Jim Emerson |

The
Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album [SOUNDTRACK]
Alan
Silvestri, Whitney Houston, Various Artists - Soundtracks - Song Collections
Audio CD (November 17, 1992); Number of Discs: 1
At the time of its release, this was the watershed for
soundtracks, selling a kazillion copies. It
documents Whitney Houston's character in the Kevin Costner
movie, which required Houston to play only herself (although one hopes
she wouldn't end up with someone as smarmy as Costner). The album is as
much a testament to the production of Babyface who, through the mid-1990s,
actually was the mainstream of contemporary hit music. Houston's singing
is much better than her acting, and almost every song enjoyed a long tenure
at the top of all the charts. Along with "I Will Always Love You" and five
other Houston songs, the soundtrack also features Lisa Stansfield, Kenny
G with Aaron Neville, and Joe Cocker with Sass Jordan.

The
Commitments: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
[SOUNDTRACK]
Various Artists - Soundtracks - Song Collections
Audio CD (August 13, 1991); Number of Discs: 1
Based on Irish writer Roddy Doyle's novel and lovingly directed with
admirable restraint by the sometimes bombastic Alan Parker, this quirky
1991 tribute to the enduring and universal power of American R&B took
some cynical criticism for its reliance on Baby Boomer-era classics such
as "Mustang Sally," "Take Me to the River," and "In the Midnight Hour."
But that sword cuts two ways: by casting a motley crew of real musicians,
including the guts 'n' gravel-voiced young vocalist Andrew Strong, Parker
didn't have to do much coaxing to reveal the obvious respect and affection
his players have for this music. The material may not be fresh, but the
love with which it's played is timeless. --Jerry McCulley |

Pretty
Woman (1990 Film) [SOUNDTRACK]
Various
Artists - Soundtracks - 1990
Audio CD (March 13, 1990); Number of Discs: 1
There's not a note of James Newton Howard's background
score from the movie, just a jukebox selection of songs heard on the soundtrack.
It's better balanced than most such exercises, with Natalie Cole's rowdy
Wild Women Do kicking off a collection of mostly upbeat dancefloor workouts
and heavy-echo ballads that reflect the feel good mood of the movie (a
modern Pygmalion-like romance starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts).
Sounding both chic and trashy, David Bowie's Fame 90 sits comfortably in
the Hollywood Boulevard setting while Go West's optimistic King Of Wishful
Thinking sums up not just the film but Tinsel Town's outlook in general-you
can almost imagine it being played, to wild approval, at production planning
meetings. Inoffensively anonymous, Lauren Wood's Fallen, Jane Wiedlin's
Tangled, Roxette's It Must Have Been Love and Peter Cetera's No Explanation
all feature the type of grandiose outpouring of emotion that goes over
big Stateside. Robert Palmer provides a touch of genuine class with Life
In Detail, a driving song that could've been designed to accompany drive-by
shots of LA's alien-nation nightlife. Though Real Wild Child, a smirking
celebration of teenage energy by Christopher Otcasek, is another
high point, it figures that the best track is the title tune. One more
reason to remember Roy Orbison fondly.

Williams makes this oldies collection something special.
Director Barry Levinson seems to have a knack for picking popular songs
that truly add to his films (see RAIN MAN and DINER for more proof). This
collection, chock full of great oldies like I GET AROUND, FIVE O'CLOCK
WORLD, and WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD, is made even better by the often humorous
dialogue (spoken by Robin Williams) interspersed throughout. This is one
of Williams' better performances and this disc gives fans a funny and sometimes
touching reminder of his unique talent. |

Rain [SOUNDTRACK] - Prince
Audio CD (July 7, 1987); Number of Discs: 1
Maybe this music by Prince & The Revolution will never quite sound
as, well, revolutionary as it did in 1984 (and nothing else has ever sounded
like the extraordinary cooing and fluttering of "When Doves Cry"), but
it's a pop landmark in Prince's Artist-ic career. The hit movie was really
just a big-screen showcase for Prince to perform these songs (some of them
in tear-the-roof-off "live" versions set in a Minneapolis club). I don't
know why that warped sermonette introduces "Let's Go Crazy" (one thing
you've got to love about Prince: he's always been weird), but somehow I'm
glad it's there. Other highlights include the sexual scorcher "Darling
Nikki" (with its crazy backwards coda) and that anthemic title tune. Don't
you miss Wendy and Lisa, too? --Jim Emerson |
